12:00 PM - 2:00 PM EXPLOITING THE POTENTIAL PERFORMANCE GAINS THAT METAL OR HIGH GRADE POLYMER ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING CAN OFFER THE DESIGN OF YOUR PRODUCT

The greatest gains using the AM process, for production parts, are to be obtained when designing with AM technology in mind at the conceptual level. This allows for the greatest gains in structural, fluid or thermal performance and it allows the component to take on a complexity or form not before possible. With the AM process, complexity is not a cost driver.

In many cases AM can achieve performance (structural, thermal or fluid flow to name a few) or cost improvements to existing parts or assemblies. Keeping the part, or assemblies, form, fit and function, AM can be used to greatly reduce part count, by grouping a number of components together in one form.

Facilitated by Adam Arnold, Director, Additive Design Consultancy; This workshop provides the opportunity to engage with leading researchers, industry representatives and defence industry end-users to discuss individual product ideas, AM design at the conceptual level and collaborate to explore strategies for achieving structural performance gains in your products.

  • How to use hollow, fluid filled walls in lightweight battlefield electronic equipment for ultra-efficient heat transfer from hot areas to cooler one

Adam is an expert in assisting the high end engineering industries in delivering the next generation of products utilising Additive Manufacturing as a manufacturing process; using a number of the latest design software products that have been developed to utilise the new design freedoms afforded by AM. Such as optimising geometry based on the structural aspects of the part and only placing material where it is needed, or creating infinitely variable lattice structures which can form part of a component. Adam has the experience of designing for AM, but more importantly utilising the performance gains now possible using advanced geometry design. Adam is therefore able to give customers an ad hoc service to access the latest software, design capability and knowledge. Adam currently directs the only design consultancy with the capability of different ground breaking software that allows us to combine optimised geometry with complex lattices. The results of which allows customers access to design techniques and technical solutions not readily available elsewhere.

Adam’s research and experience in this emerging field of design can give added value and performance gains to many products in structural, fluid or thermal applications, or exciting combinations of all three. With lengthy experience in the aerospace, defence, microwave and RF antennas and motorsport - designing systems and products at the highest levels for air, land and sea applications.
